First time paddleboarding: what to expect

Your first rental with Cascade Paddle Boards starts with a waiver at the shop, then a board, paddle, fin, leash, life vest and dry bag, no deposit required. You launch from the Jantzen Fuel Depot dock on Hayden Island, stay within North Portland Harbor, and head upriver first so the trip back is easier. Anyone 18 or older can rent (riders must be at least 12), and you don't need any experience to go.

Before you come

Renters must be 18 or older. Anyone under 18 needs to be with an adult, and riders must be at least 12. The weight limit is 275 lbs per board.

The last rental goes out 3 hours before we close, and boards are due back 1 hour before closing. Hours change by season, so call ahead to confirm today's hours before you head out.

When you arrive

Park at 12050 N Jantzen Dr, the Navigator Coffee lot, and walk down to the floating dock at 12010 N Jantzen Dr, the green building with yellow trim, to pick up your board.

Every renter signs a waiver at the shop before heading out. Scan the QR code on the flyer at the shop to sign it.

There's no deposit. We keep a card on file and may charge it for the value of the board if needed.

A dry bag is included for your phone and keys. If you have questions about anything else to bring, give us a call.

Getting the hang of it

Start on your knees and stand up once you feel steady. Look ahead instead of down at your feet. If you fall, that's part of it. Climb back on and keep paddling.

On the water

The Columbia has current. Drifting away from the dock is easy, and getting back takes more effort, so pace yourself for the return trip.

Barges and powerboats share the river. Their wakes can reach you after they pass, so keep an eye out and give them room.

The river stays cold even on hot days. A sudden fall into cold water can take your breath away.

Every rental includes a life vest and a leash. Wear the vest instead of just carrying it, and keep the leash attached so your board stays with you if you fall.

Stay within North Portland Harbor, and head upriver first.

Heading back

Since you headed upriver first, the current helps carry you back toward the dock instead of working against you.

Boards are due back 1 hour before closing, so leave enough time to paddle back at an easy pace.
